What is the movie saying about poetry? Support you comments.
According to the movie, through Mr. Keating, he says we read and write poetry because we are part of the human race. The human race is full of passion, beauty romance, and love. It is what we live for. Mr. Keating also said to tear out the introduction section of the poetry text stating "understanding poetry". In this section it states to understand poetry using mathematics, through graphing. Mr. Keating says it is "excrement". He says poetry is to be understood in their own way and opinion even if it seems silly or wrong. He teaches them in two different lessons of a nontraditional style (non-conformity). First, when he asked his students to stand on the desk to view the world at a different view. Second, when he asks his students to walk in the courtyard. He asked them to walk in their own pace and style, being unique. He is saying to add all of this into poetry.
What do you think of poetry? How is it similar and different than the movie's view of poetry?
Poetry is a non-violent way to express your emotions, whether it is anger, love, friendship, etc. Poetry should be original, and each person should interpret the poetry in their own perspective or view, different ways, not mathematically. That each person should have some individuality. But, there should be some conformity. From what Matthew said "one's own unorthodox opinions and being insane". All the non-conformity can lead to insane situations, again what Matthew said "violating societal norms", as well as family norms, etc. Also, the authors should be original, but using conformity. For example using the literary devices such as similes, metaphors, personification, etc, but showcasing it with originality. As well poetry can be best inspired by everyday life, personal experiences, relationships, etc. Your life is different than everyone else, meaning no matter what your poetry is about, it is your opinion, your thoughts, and emotions, making it original.
