To people who breathe in Poetry day to day, it is more than a mere jumble of cheesy lines - it is the utmost beautiful treasure that keeps them alive. The movie: "Dead Poets Society" elaborates around the idea of: poetry is a powerful tool that helps members of the human race express their feelings of any such - whether gratitude, love, or hate. Poetry can be applied anywhere, anytime, and anyplace by anyone. The story helps us understand that Poetry is not limited to a certain structure or pattern. Similar to how the introduction of the textbook: Understanding Poetry tried to limit the students into thinking that mathematical and logical methods can be developed to find the definite greatness of a poem. Moreover, Keating tells the students to stand on their desks to remind them to constantly look at things from a different perspective - when reading poems, think about how the author is feeling! Poetry, really, is a vast territory which is used for different purposes. Many use Poetry to send a message across to readers; and most of them revolve around a central theme, might it be love or hate. This movie really joggles up our impression of poetry, and starts to grow on us. It made me realize the potential of Poetry has no constraints, because poetry really, is everywhere.
What do you think of poetry? How is it similar and different than the movie's view of poetry?
I was first introduced to the concept of poetry way back in grade 5. It was then that specific guidelines were set for us to write poetry. We had to write a diamond poem, acronym poem, etc. Frankly, it didn't leave a pretty impression in my brain - probably because it was tedious following their rules. For example, ____(insert name) is like a _____(insert similar animal). But hey, who am I to criticize the person who invented those acronym poems? Back then to when I was still a simpleton, Poetry was a job, a quite annoying one as well. This movie. albeit, completely changed the perspective I viewed poetry from. A whole 360 degrees rotation. When Mr.Keating lifted the fences that constrained poetry's ultimate potential, it feels much more free! It's great to know that I have can now write poetry to no limit to no certain manner. It's awesome to finally understand I can write Poetry that matches my style, you know, the "linda" style of poetry. As of right now, Poetry is quite of an useful gift to have, and to use. The Dead Poets Society movie dubs Poetry to be a magical thing - something that can help express every emotion; and quite frankly, I do not disagree with any of it. It's just so true, and then again, poetry is the truth.
"Carpe Diem. Seize the day. Make your lives extraordinary." -Keating
