What is the movie saying about poetry? Support your comments.

Poetry is about love, romance and passion. It is powerful. Through poetry, one can be inspired to do things beyond what they normally do. To believe in their own belief in the face of others. As Keating asks his student to "walk" in the courtyard, he tells them to note the difficulty to maintain their own pace and rhythm when walking, and points out that it is also true with pace and rhythm in poetry. As Keating asks his students to stand on his table so they can view the world from a different perspective, he also says to not only consider what the author think, but what you think. Everyone can interpret a poem in their own unique way, unlike the introduction in the poetry textbook from the movie - the preface "Understanding Poetry" where it instructs the readers the right way to enjoy and read poetry, by graphing it out. Poetry is what the human race stays alive for.

What do you think of poetry? How is it similar and different than the movie's view of poetry?

Poetry is a message or an idea conveyed through words in only the most beautiful way. Poetry is art. And saying that, poetry is a completely abstract concept. A poet may write about anything ranging from an ordinary, everyday object such as a pencil to ideas like love, grief. A poet may write in many different forms or not a form at all. While poets have that absolute freedom of how to express themselves through poetry, readers also have the freedom to interpret the poet's message in any way they please. Poetry is love, romance, and passion, that is very true. Poetry is what the human race stays alive for. That too, is very true. It is another way to express yourself - just like all other art elements, music, painting, acting, dancing.

  1. Hi Linda, it was a pure pleasure to read your responses to Dead Poets Society because I feel like you have captured all the elements of poet some may have never thought about. For example you elaborated the idea that poetry is love, romance and passion -- and you also did this in a truly beautiful writing format. However, I believe you could of added several more examples to help advocate for your idea even further (maybe you can talk about what poetry is like for kids vs DPS). Furthermore, I was delighted to find that your opinions were going in the same direction as mine and that makes us: "thinkeralikers"!
